For you to be able to use and edit apps you need to make sure you are on the editable format (how to edit a bigpicture) of the bigpictures or template and not the view format.

Each App will have (or not) some custom fields which will help process the information you want to obtain from the external software. 

You will be able to duplicate an App inside a bigpicture​​ as well.
